Here we are again, on the heels of a fresh new year. For many, this is the time of year when we visit our goals and resolve to meet them! But … how? How do you make a lasting change? I don’t know about you, but I think I have failed at more resolutions than I have succeeded at. The trouble is, I’m a creature of habit and frankly, I’m a bit lazy. I’m all about instant gratification, and the reality is that change often takes time. So how does someone like me make it stick?

Sometimes you just decide. You draw a line in the sand and make a conscious decision to change. Me? I’m non-committal, I couldn’t get on board with the whole ‘go big or go home’ approach; so I decided instead to feed my need for instant gratification. One small change, surely even I could make a small change stick – and when I did – BLAM! Instant gratification. Win, win, win.

In 2014, I challenged myself to pick one personality characteristic that is shared by the people I most admire that I could use work on. I chose gratitude. Daily, I made a conscious effort to be grateful. Not a grand gesture, not a large time commitment, simply taking time once a day to find a quote about gratitude or to reflect on the things that went well throughout the day. Easy, peasy. What I failed to realize was that that one small change would have such a big impact. Reflecting on the last year, I find that it’s easier to let go of small things. I can more readily focus my energy on the things that are going well, rather than dwelling on the things that are frustrating.

#There’sAnOilForThat!: Still sound like a lot to tackle? The good news is, there’s an oil for that! I recommend Joy. It’s my happiest of happy places. When I find myself struggling to be positive, it is the first oil that I reach for. I guess you could say … I’m grateful for Joy.

Wishing you simple changes with big impact and a very happy new year!
